The three major flaws of the PSP Go

The three major flaws of the PSP Go

The three major flaws of the PSP Go

So Sony’s new PSP Go is focused on portability and the PSP to have on the go since its smaller, right?. Plus its the forum factor, being that of a slider. Like a Nokia N95 for example. But there are 3 major flaws, no we aren’t talking about it not having a UMD drive. Were not going to bitch about that here like every other site does…. In our opinion these are the 3 major flaws the system has:

  • The non removable battery and battery life. Sony market it as a PSP: Go right, but after 3 hours more or less its the PSP Stop. And since it can’t have a spare battery as you can’t change the damn battery. So your PSP’ing on the Go is limited and therefore flawed. P.S Why is there no battery info in the PSP Go firmware ??? Hmmm Sony wants to hide the poor battery life?
  • No UMD to Digital Download option. Ok its fine that it doesn’t have a a UMD drive. We know this. But how about a method of loading a UMD serial number or something into PSN and then download that game to your internal flash memory?
  • Wireless speed. This is also a problem of all PSP systems. This PSP Go is all digital now and focused on the Playstation Network. Buy and download the games you want. Why for the love of god, Sony do we have only 802.11b wireless speeds? 11mps. At least opt for 802.11 b/g standard? 54mbs would be fine. Even better N draft speeds, if we were dreaming…. Downloading a 1GB game on 802.11 B is very slow. It will take around 3 and a half hours to download Gran Turismo via your PSP, its a 1010mb download. Better to connect up and use Media go to download at you computers 802.11g or n speeds. Much faster this way. But if only Sony added faster wifi to the PSP Go. This wouldn’t be an issue. Hell my mobile phone has Wireless G.

There you have it. The major flaws in our eyes. If you can get past this, then the Go is maybe the PSP for you. (That and if you have small child like hands – Kidding!)

Keep an eye out soon for our PSP Go review soon, this post we be part of it.

When will the PSP Go be fully hacked? I have a whole collection of UMD games,
and since the Go doesn’t have a UMD drive then I need to convert them to ISOs to play on the Go. Only problem is the Go can’t play ISOs yet. I hope soon.

I have loved the PSP “GO” ever since I first saw it announced (at E3 I believe but don’t hold me to it) But have not followed it closely until recently as Xmas is coming up and I would love to see a nice shiny “GO” under the tree! Now, It seems to me that the PSP “GO” has a much cooler hardware features over the PSP 3000, and they are MUCH cooler, whether or not these features are worth the extra £70 or so is down to personal preference. Software features not so much new, just updated which is rather disappointing for the re-release of a console.
I also find it very unfair for Sony to cut out all use of your own UMD disks all together, (and not all PSP games are on the PSN to buy again!) I suppose you could trade them at your local game store but for the price you would get for them in return is in no way close to that you would have to pay on PSN.
In my opinion, the PSP “GO” is a much better looking piece of kit and I DO want to get one but having to pay up to £31.99 for a game when the UMD costs £24.99 (in my local store at least) is ridiculous and causes hesitation on a grand scale for me. The battery life is also very off putting, 3 Hours?… Come on!
On another note, judging on the Playstation 3 system and its current state of homebrew possibilities, I hold my breath on whether Homebrew will actually make it to the PSP “GO” or not. I, and as with everyone else here, I would love to see Homebrew working on “GO.”

Are people just oblivious to everything? The PSP Go is a completely separate handheld from its other 3 previous models. The PSP GO is all digital… its a new approach to things. Why do you think they are marketing both the PSP GO and PSP 3000? Because they are entirely separate systems that almost have nothing in common! The PSP Go is NOT going to replace the other PSP models as the superior model. It is only a side system to have some new added content to the mix. This is why Sony has not pulled the PSP 3000 off the market and won’t do that. You have a choice. You can have one or you can have both. So the PSP Go doesn’t have a UMD Drive… duh! It in a way is not a traditional PSP. They are both going to always be available side by side… never one or the other! How hard is it to understand that one is not better than the other but rather each has it’s own specialties.

I bought a PSP Go a 2 days ago, I also own a PSP 3000 (CFW of course) I really like the PSP Go , i sold a lot of my other games to Privet Sellers on Craigs list, or Buy n sell for like 10 – 20 each.
The PS online Store sells PSP games Averaging around 19.99 each . some higher Some lower , but Average 19.99 . I even bought Blade Dancer for 4.99 , God of war 14.99. So its not all bad. FF7 PS1 $9.99

I hate that Square Enix has not released any of their games for Download yet, that is for sure a huge hit in my books. Other then that i really like it. the older PSPs i found to big to be portable, thats just me , im sure others made it work. Battery life, i squeezed 4 hours Solid play on FF7 on the brightest screen setting.

Bottom line, Yeah it sucks there is no UMD support. But i Sold my Games Privet Sales for the same price i bought them for on the PS store. so with a little foot work you can make it work. I did just fine.
Also with the lack of UMD support , Dev Teams will be pushing hard on this, I guess about 2-3 weeks for ISO support. (cross your fingers) i know i will ^_^

Interesting… most of the additional features that we are paying for with each psp update/release restricts us from doing more that the previous versions could. Essentially we are paying for more restrictions and less features. Funny thing is, it seems that the driving force buying the new psp is more an issue of “to see if we could bypass these restrictions” rather that enjoying the psp itself. Honestly, I don’t care about any psp store or official psp anything. I use wifi only for skype so it is ok for my uses. The battery.. well that’s just stupid. Truth is, I dislike the fact that sony aren’t being genuine towards their us fellow customers and home brewers. Instead of fighting against us, they should support hombrew in an aim to generally improve their product, as opposed to having a bunch excited (before purchase) but abruptly disappointed (after purchase) customers. They would be surprised that we have much more to offer them than they think.

It’s in the psp go instruction manual, you CAN, i repeat, CAN remove the battery. If even the isntruction manual says you can, you can.

The wireless speed is indeed a gripe.
Sony is probably considering it and going to implement a umd -> digital system soon, but since this is my first psp system, idc :P

Of course you can remove the battery… you just can’t do it as easily as the regular PSP (which takes like 3 seconds.)

But if you think about it, it’s no harder/easier to remove the battery in a DS, DSi, iPhone, iPod, wristwatch… etc. I get the whole complaint, you can’t just carry around extra batteries to slap into the PSP Go when it runs low on juice. Inconvenient, but not a deal-breaker.

I’m considering a PSP Go, especially if it’s hacked. 16GB worth of homebrew, emulators, movies and ISO backups in a sleek, tiny package is really hard to pass up.

i know the battery life is stated at least 3 hours, but on the first day i got it my PSPGo literally lasted the entire day (about 11 hours) I had been fiddling with it, going on wireless all day downloading stuff, net browsing, playing via adhoc against my brother for about an hour, playing demos for about another hour or 2, trying bluetooth for a few minutes, using skype, internet radio, transferring files etc. Lol just about everything a person does when they get their new toy, but although i did keep leaving it standby for small part of the day (total maybe 3 hours) i would always keep sliding it open (very addiciting) or lighting it to view the clock or calendar (very mesmerising) and i can say i myself and impressived at the battery life. Even xstokerx’s PSPGo dug in its heels deep and withstood 4 hours of gameplay and didnt give in 2/3 of its battery power. Although i still would like to see some improvement in the battery life. How does Apple make their small devices with such a long battery life and large disk space? Is it patented or something, because it always made me wonder why no other brand can compete with at the time? Maybe its the reason why iPods are so popular because everyone else always lags behind them in terms of portable technology. Now if Sony could understand this then this could be their way to penetrate (non-sexually, but metaphorically) the market more…

I agree with slim ru and xstokerx. For those that see the PSPGo for its flaws, (yes they may suck) but in time we might come to appreciate the subtle pros. It’s called progression. It will have a place its own place in this world. A lot of people hatebashed the Apple Mac but in time people accepted it. There is a difference in pointing out the flaws when you dont have it and when you do get it. This sounds bad, but when you actually hold your own PSPGo in your hands for the first time, you kind of forgive the little guy for its shortcomings.

These things keep me on the fence since one side is I never owned a psp and never cared for small disks getting scratched and the other is like forget that I only want a hand full of games meaning i will get more entertainment out of my modded DS lite or getting a 1000 or 2000 with the pandora battery and magic drive
so it’s half and half. The battery life meh could care less I usually play my other handhelds at home cause I’m worried about losing my crap and I love the transition to flash media i guess i could call it because I only have to worry about the system getting lost instead of both that and games and another note this is no replacement. It is more of a response to the i-pod touch and it’s apps and games that get hits frequently but, “so far their not too creative with the minis thing” it’s like the ipod games or the xbox live arcade which I love the arcade deal and could enjoy castle crashers on the Go…4 player online new chararacters and story line (basically dif bad guy) or a portable shadow complex ,^.^, …drools ok anyways I only would enjoy the tetris mini as of right now so we will have to see how this turns out by Christmas if it doesn’t have all ps1 and psp ff games i might be out on this deal oh and would like to see a price cut idk a fair $199.99 which should have been your starting price seeing how your slim non-back compat ps3 is $299.99 and other consoles with a better library than the starting PSN has is bad too. I’m not really downing but, would like to say if I was in on this i would be all about more customer transfers and this on their part was not good strategy. Thanks for those that care about this opinion and read it even though you probably seen this many of times else where.

In Australia I got my PSPGo for $400 but now that it includes free 4 games and the Media Go software, im guessing the PSPGo console itself is probably imo about $150 cheaper than the retail price. So for all those that think the price tag is too high, just consider that as well before bashing into it. I also do acknowledge the fact that the PSP-3000 bundles are still going to be overall cheaper so if you aren’t enticed by the new aesthetics and extra “technology” then go for the PSP-3000.

Well I just got one and I see no problems with the dev team being able to hack this thing….
You know what? time will tell. They said I couldn’t play computer games on my ps3 I do that.
You really think that Sony is that bad then you can just not buy one then they will drop the price and you will buy one just like the ps3. I bet the same people that are bashing this PSP has an Ipod! I bet you do. This is the same thing no CD’s and the whole umd thing im sure they will fix it but like others have said its not a PSP and should not be treated like one. The other PSP’s don’t have tethering? no. This is a totally different item. I think all you complainers out there have no biz sense anyway or else you would come up with a game system that would out do any of these systems but I also bet that Sony or some other company will buy you out before you even get it to market it if it was any good. I see this moving forward not being stuck with having to go to the damn game store that rips you anyway for games. well I got 2 more today and man there fun and my kids love it. they can watch there movies and play games and have there music and its not a crap screen res. at least be happy for that, DS owners. OK that’s me too we have those as well. I think there garbage but I am not going to bash them b/c they are what they are.

Also you can play “psx” PS1 games no problem on this new hand held the PSP Go. we all know how much those are. Maybe a $1.00 at your local store. Will keep you posted on the other thing I am finding with this PSP GO

the reason why sony didnt add the g wifi is it will take the battery life way down to cause 802.11b has a weaker range then 802.11 g so it doesnt give off m uch power then the g does so it would proply only be an hour or so with the g on and bt

Yeah, I don’t understand the battery life though. 3 Hours! Really! Common Sony! I have a Sony mp3 player that has a 43 hour battery life and when I found it only one other came close and it was at 25 hours. You can probably find an extended battery online by now though. I want emulators for the PSPGo! Oh, and ISO’s. Never had a PSP before and havn’t got the Go yet but ready for the Emu’s and ISO’s!

What I heard was that you can have a friend log in to your account through their Go and download the games for free (that you own through the online store) to their PSPGo since once you pay then download remains forever as yours. So someone can buy the game and share it to their friends using their login. Is this true anyone?

Thanks for the honesty Ant and every ones opinions I just wish sony, nintendo, and microsoft would read them lol. The DS is crap in a way without bashing but, I have a modded one with a flash cart and such so I’m good on that and I don’t own a I pod I like the touch but, it does not strike my fancy ^.^ since I see it as a music and video player and I can do that with any game system anyways I find it not very useful when I can do that and play good quality games as well hell I pod might have a foot in the race but, the other companies have been running this marathon for a while so I’m happy with the mp3′s, mpegs, and games on my DS so whatever JUS is fun on it and about the Go, when or better if it is possible to get me to buy it before Christmas (still need that edge hopefully more games on PSN will do that XP) I will finally have a PSP and like you said without having to get cheated at a gamestore screw it a little more cash but, I’m getting them new and will not have to worry about breaking or smudging…I might of just found that edge. Now if they can put, FF Dissidia out and at least throw in a free game.

Oh about the whole thing about the I pod games to the PSP minis is I am just giving my opinion that so far sony has a great idea but, are not being creative like that of I pod and they are new to the game world and I really see it working if they allow us to program some apps and games for it.

it would sell alot better if they would let you transfer your all ready owned psp umd games to the pspgo, but i bet the reason sony is not doing that is 95% of the psp out there are hacked.

They are going to let you do up to 3 games as long as you have the codes for those games. I’m sure its not easy. But I think I found a way to play psx files or at least turn DL content into psx format and play your old ones anyways. Also if your PS3 can play PS2 games then you can play those as well on the PSP GO.

That would have to be connected to the PS3 though right. As for transferring old UMD’s that would be important if they want to get more of the older PSP users to become apart of the new crowd but, I don’t see how Sony could reinforce the copy of the game you own if you could sell it to a game store since it is still a physical copy and then you still can own a logical copy of the same game and make a profit even if it is just $5-10 bucks.
